Spring is here and it’s a great time to learn to surf on the Taitung East Coast. While for experienced surfers April / May are known as months for small waves and time to break out the spear gun, when it comes to learning to surf they could be the best months in the year to learn to surf on the East Coast and here’s why.

When you learn to surf, you don’t actually want big waves, so the best season for learning to surf does not actually correlate with the best wave season for us experienced seasoned east coast surfers. Ever tried to learn surfing on a 6-8 foot dumping swell, and you’ll know what I’m talking about. I have thanks to my older cousins and bravado aside, its not really fun when you are just trying to stay alive out there. What you need is fun, not a near death experience.

For learning what you want is small, clean and consistent waves. The size doesn’t matter much as with the long fun boards beginners learn on these can pick up and ride literally anything.

A 1-2 foot swell is enough. While April – May is known in surfing circles on the East Coast as an inconsistent time for waves, its actually rarely flat. Almost always there is at least a gentle 1-2 foot swell rolling in, which while is not going to get a ripper frothing its perfect for someone who wants to start to learn to surf.

Add to this that it’s not as cold as winter nor as hot nor busy as the peak of the summer season. Finally, its not typhoon season yet, therefore its very unlikey for a typhoon to sweep through like it can in July / August and reap havoc on your carefully made plans.

So if you’re sitting around thinking of giving surfing a go, you don’t have to wait until summer comes along. April / May are every bit as good as the summer for someone who wants to learn. We will still be getting out down here as much as we can and I am using every opportunity to get my boys out in the water when they can get some time off school. We look forward to seeing you down here and coming out in the water with us sometime.

Remember the best surfer is the one that’s having the most fun out there.
