For all Helpers who are interested in Permaculture:  

In addition to informal chatting, and learning on the job, Mark can provide as per person’s interest an hour a day of permaculture theory / sustainable design suited to the person’s interests, so that they can learn more about the wider picture of natural farming /sustainable design that each element or project they are working on fits into.

What Helper Can Learn

Lay paths and swale planting

 

16 Jan- 26th Jan

Helper must be physically fit, able to lift wood, stones, dig holes and able to spend a day doing physical labour work.  This will suit someone that likes to work outside, doesn’t mind getting dirty and has an interest in Permaculture.  Previous experience is not required, but person should have a genuine interest in learning about working the land

  • Learn how to make natural  paths from drift wood, and stone
  • Learn key elements of garden landscaping and design as well as permaculture zoning

Composting Toilet

6th-24th Feb

Helper must be physically fit and able to spend a day lifting, digging and helping with building.  This job will be a mixture of building, digging and planting. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing.  Previous experience is not required, but having used tools or done some building of some sort is an advantage

  • Carpentry wood working skills
  • How to compost
  • How to set up a working composting toilet
  • How to compost human manure
  • How compost helps soil, how to improve soil through natural farming techniques.
  • Why we should take the effort to compost human manure.

Outdoor Showers

6th-24th Feb

Helper must be physically fit and able to spend a day lifting, digging and helping with building.  This job will be a mixture of building, digging and planting. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing. Previous experience is not required, but having used tools or done some building of some sort is an advantage

  • How to make an outside shower from green materials which recycles all used water to garden, and reduces as much as possible impact on environment
  • How to choose plants and how to make swales for planting around shower (focus on fruit trees)
  • Why we should bother
  • Theory behind greywater recycling
  • Practical skills

 

Outdoor Sinks

6th-24th Feb

Helper must be physically fit and able to spend a day lifting, digging and helping with building.  This job will be a mixture of building, digging and planting. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing.  Previous experience is not required, but having used tools or done some building of some sort is an advantage

  • How to make an outside sink from green materials and radical plumbing so all water can feed garden
  • How to create swales and choose appropriate plants around sink area (focus on fruit trees)
  • Practical skills

Green Roof Installation

24th to 2nd March

Helper must be physically fit, able to dig, lift and wheel barrow stones and earth and help with planting out green roof. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing  Previous experience is not required, but having used tools or done some building of some sort is an advantage

  • Learn how to design a green roof
  • Learn how to install a green roof on a container house
  • Practical building and landscaping skills
  • Learn the theory behind how  green roofs and walls work
  • Choosing plants for green roofs

Green Wall Installation and planting

2nd -5th March

Helper must be physically fit, able to dig, lift put in place and plant out physical green wall structures. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing. Will suit someone that is interested in environmental design that enjoys learning by doing

  • How to make and install a green roof
  • Theory behind green walls
  • Planting for green walls
  • Choosing plants for green walls
  • Practical building and landscaping skills

Swale and landscaping planting

5th – 13th March

Helper must be physically fit, able to dig, lift wood and stones and assist with planting. Will suit someone that is interested in permaculture that enjoys learning by doing. Previous experience is not required, but person should have a genuine interest in learning about working the land

  • Learn key elements of garden landscaping and design as well as permaculture zoning
  • Learn how to make and use swales /hugoculture and why we do this as a key part of natural farming / permaculture
  • Learn about different plants fruit trees and where they grow and why.
